The answer is that – like the East Africa Cup – they are all members of Beyond Sport World ( http://www.beyondsportworld.org/ ) which aims ‘to connect the widespread, global population dedicated to sport and development’. Quite an ambition.
The range of member organisations is diverse and impressive. It reminds you how many people are using sport in good ways. I particularly like the professional cycling team that races around the US and as the main marketing initiative for ‘globalbike’, an organisation which provides bikes to community care workers in the developing world.
Mitcham Korfball Club is in there too, as is an Ethiopian outfit that works with streetchildren using football, martial arts, athletics, tennis, basketball, circus, juggling, and dance: bigger names like the NBA and the British Council are represented.
In the build up to the first African World Cup it’s important that the opportunities for the sports-for-development sector to connect are taken up and this seems like a good platform.
