Let the journey begin

This year’s East Africa Cup (EAC) will be held in Moshi between June 20 and June 26.

But June is miles away – so why are you telling us now?

Mostly because we wanted to remind people that the EAC isn’t just about a week in Moshi - it's about a year in the community. All of the teams involved need to prove a year round commitment to using sport in the community before they can enter*.

For teams who make it - and we are anticipating around 1500 or so youngsters this year – the emphasis isn’t just on sport; before the games begin there are workshops each day on topics like conflict resolution, leadership and preventing HIV and AIDS. And at the end of each day there are cultural events which feature music, dance and theatre from participating countries.

There’ll be a BBC presence too: local journalists will learn how to cover sport and development issues, and youth leaders will learn about how to use media skills in order to help them promote their work.

As for the hard-working organizers of the tournament – they have been working hard already. Are there are enough pitches and accommodation for those involved? Do we have the right number of teams? Referees? First Aid teams? Seminar leaders? Is the website ready? (in fact the website isn’t ready but you can get a flavour of last year’s event here: http://www.facebook.com/eastafricacup )

It’s a long journey, but it hasn’t gone un-noticed: EAC 2010 was nominated as one of the best events for peace and development using sports in 2010 by the prestigious Peace and Sports organization based in Monaco – can we go one better this year?
