As part of the media seminars during the East Africa we're encouraging journalists to set up big feature interviews to pitch to editors. These interviews will be with not only people involved in the tournament but also professionals away from the tournament who know how football can be used to spread messages.
Rio Ferdinand is a perfect example of this in England. He regularly does interviews around subjects that are close to his heart to generate publicity for those causes. Knife crime is a huge issue in England at the moment and Rio has been one of the biggest names speaking out against it and supporting projects which are trying to get knives off our streets.
Rio recently interviewed the Prime Minister Gordon Brown for the Observer Sport magazine- they ended up takling more about football than politics but Rio spoke to the Prime minister about his concerns over knife crime and the publicity generated by the interview was huge.
We approached Rio about speaking with our journalists at the East Africa Cup as he has travelled to Africa in the past and feels very strongly about youth football. We recieved a very nice response wishing every luck for the tournament and apologies that Rio couldnt speak with us or do any interviews next week as he is in fact getting married. A valid excuse I'm sure you`ll agree!
So the search continues for a big feature interviewee.... The professional players here are finally enjoying a two week holiday at the end of the season so contacting and tracking them down is proving difficult.
Who is your dream interviewee...we can only ask. Answers on a postcard please ( i.e respond here!)
See you in Moshi.
